HAND SEWING

If you have not used a needle for some time, check it is not rusty before you begin sewing.

If you can’t find a thread the exact shade you need, use a shade darker than the fabric.

Start with a single thread of about 24in (60cm) – any longer and it will be prone to tangle and weaken as it is repeatedly pulled through the fabric. Double the thread if needed for strength.

Use a needle threader to thread even the smallest needle quickly and easily. Push the wire loop through the needle eye, slide the thread end through the loop and pull it back through the eye, taking the thread with it.

Thread often tangles and knots after a short period of hand stitching; coating it before you begin with a little beeswax or a synthetic thread conditioner will prevent this.

If you are going to do a lot of hand stitching, using a thimble will protect your fingertips from damage. Wearing a thimble may feel strange at first, but if you persevere it will soon begin to feel natural.
